Farming

Trafalgar is proud to be the largest, fully integrated trout farming business in the U.K. Our estate's own hatchery provides the perfect environment to incubate, hatch and nurture the eggs of our brood trout until fully flourished. Through a series of extensive gravel ponds the fish are naturally encouraged to grow slowly and more naturally at lower densities in waters provided by The Hampshire Avon River.

Here the water is filtered down from The Avon's chalk reservoir on Salisbury plain. Indeed these chalk downlands are so fertile that production has gone relatively undiminished through drought, flood or any other atmospheric anomaly for thirty years, thus ensuring a continuous supply of fish to the marketplace.

Whilst bearing the classic hallmarks associated with great tradition, the farms also marry the most up-to-date modern techniques, constantly striving for excellence in every aspect of production. Fish welfare issues are of great prominence, with an emphasis on environmental health strongly adhered to at all times. We work closely with The Environment Agency who monitor our codes of practice with great care and dedication to ensure that the settlement facilities which extend below the farms, return water to the rivers in excellent condition.

Similarly, such high standards of safety are also translated to the needs of our staff. At our farms we place a great emphasis on people, with many of our employees having grown and developed in and around the business to provide an invaluable backbone of knowledge and experience within the fish farming environment.

Monitoring

B.T.A. (British Trout Association) Our farms comply implicitly with The British Trout Association Code of Practice.

C.E.F.A.S. The legal body responsible for the monitoring of fish farming practices on a continual basis by ensuring that any diseases are stringently monitored and reported and that all records are kept accurate and up-to-date.

E.F.S.I.S. (The European Food Safety Inspection Service) Has applied 'British Retail Consortium Standards' to the farming practices at Trafalgar Fisheries and, on behalf of UK Quality Trout has awarded us with it's highest award of achievement.

VETERINARY Peter Scott Msc, BVSc, MIBiol, FRCVS, is retained to constantly monitor fish health and welfare and to ensure that all legislation and correct practices are adhered to at all times.

The Cerne Giant. With a 30 foot erect phallus giving him the nickname of the "Rude man of Cerne" this huge chalk carving sits over the source of our farm's crystal clear water.
