FARMING
practices Trafalgar is the largest, fully integrated trout farming business in the UK. Our own brood trout produce eggs which are incubated and hatched in the estate's own hatchery and nearby farms. On growing is achieved in extensive gravel ponds allowing the fish to grow slowly and naturally at low densities. The Hampshire Avon supplies water filtered from its chalk reservoir on Salisbury plain. So reliable is the sponge effect of the chalk downlands that production has gone unbroken through drought and flood for thirty years ensuring a continuous supply of fish on to the market. At the same time the farms are continually modernising with particular regard to fish welfare issues and issues relating to staff safety. Many of our staff have grown with the business and provide us with years of fish farming experience. The farms are environmentally friendly, returning
water to rivers in excellent condition. The Environment Agency watches
this situation with the greatest care. Settlement facilities extend below
the farms to ensure water is returned to the rivers in good condition. Monitoring VETERINARY - Peter Scott MSC., BVSc.,
MIBiol., FRCVS., is retained to monitor fish health and welfare and to
ensure all legislation is adhered to.
